Mary Moody and Robert Rankin

Mary Moody

Married Robert Rankin 20 Nov 1803, Guilford Co., NC

There is a slight possibility that she was Alexander Moody's daughter and, thus, Thomas's and Jean's granddaughter.

Information about Mary and Robert is based on the pension applications filed by him and later by Mary as his widow, and his parental information is based on George Rankin's will, 1760 in Guilford Co., NC. Based on statements in his pension application, Robert Rankin was in Guilford, North Carolina. Forney and Rankin state that he was the son of George Rankin and Lydia Steele.1

Robert entered the NC militia June 1776 and served under Captain Bell in a regiment commanded by Colonel Caval until hs discharge Oct 1776. He re-enlisted in Mar 1780 and served in a regiment under Colonel Paisley.

Robert and Mary moved from Guilford Co, NC to McNairy Co., TN in 1830, and he applied for a pension based on his Revolutionary War service on 7 June 1832 at the Circuit Court of McNairy Co., TN.

NOTE by JFA: Although the authors, Moore and Rankin, apparently sometimes accepted "folk tales" as facts, I have found nothing that causes me to doubt George and Lydia as Robert's parents. Getting individuals confused would be understandable since there were several George Rankins and Robert Rankins in Guilford Co, NC. There is a George Rankin, presumably also from Guilford Co., NC, buried in the cemetery (Bethel Springs) in McNairy Co., TN, where Mary's Robert is buried.
