Joseph T. Smith and Wives
Sarah Buchanan and Mary Storms

Sarah Belinda Buchanan

Joseph T. and Sarah Buchanan had son Henry C., born 5 December 1878, and this son is said to have married Julia Womack 7 December 1896 in Carter County. My cursory search found no supporting records for Henry's marriage except perhaps the 1900 census, but even its support is doubtful since Julia would have to be Mary, the young woman on that census.

Mary Storms

Birth dates are from (1) Missouri death certicates, (2) Find A Grave, Pleasant Hill Cemetery or Donipan Oak RidgeCemetery, Ripley County, Missouri, or Woodlawn Cemetery, Dunklin County, Missouri, or (3) 1910 census.

Joseph Smith

Joseph T. and Sarah Buchanan had son Henry C., born 5 December 1878, and this son is said to have married Julia Womack 7 December 1896 in Carter County. My cursory search found no supporting records for Henry's marriage except perhaps the 1900 census, but even its support is doubtful since Julia would have to be Mary, the young woman on that census.

Although I found no record of marriage for Joseph Smith or Mary Storms in Oregon County where they lived, I find it reasonable to accept the record of marriage August 1882 for a couple listed as Smith Travis, over 21, and Anna J. Sorms (, not Storms), under 18, as being the marriage of Joseph and Mary Jane. First, there appear to be no Travises in Oregon County, Ripley County, or Carter County on the 1880 census. Second, the mother of Anna J. Sorms, who gave written consent for her to marry was M. A. Storms (t included), which was correct for Mary Jane Storms's mother. Mary Jane, who was probably born October 1867, would have been a bit under 18 in August 1882.

NOTE: although listed as a son, Moody was without much doubt the daughter who married John C. Carson as Moda Smith in the home of J. T. Smith. One can trace John C. and Moda Carson in censuses in Ripley County on through 1950 when he is listed as J. Cleveland and she is first listed as Modine which is lined through and replaced by Moda. The next family in 1900 was Edward McCall, November 1877, MO TN MO, and his relative Mary Smith wid, October 1881, MO IL IL. Although unlikely, it is possible that Mary was the widow of Henry C. Smith. They would have been about the same age.
